CDC removes data on sexual orientation, gender identity from website

Data from the Youth Risk Behavioral Surveillance System, a federal survey on youth behavioral habits, has been removed from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website, leaving researchers concerned about the lack of access to crucial information, particularly regarding LGBTQ+ populations.

The survey, which tracks various teen behaviors such as smoking, drinking, sexual activity, and more, is one of the largest nationally representative surveys of its kind. Researchers like Ariel Beccia, who focuses on eating disorders in LGBTQ+ populations at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, expressed their distress over the sudden disappearance of the data.

The removal of the data has sparked outrage within the public health and scientific communities, with many researchers scrambling to download the information before it was taken down. This move has left many experts feeling uncertain about the future availability of important data on youth behavioral trends.

In addition to the YRBS data, other important datasets, such as the CDC’s Social Vulnerability Index and information on addressing racism as a driver of health disparities, have also been removed from the CDC website. Furthermore, certain pages on the U.S. Census Bureau website that discuss sexual orientation and gender identity are now missing.

The removal of these datasets and information comes amidst efforts by the Trump administration to erase data that acknowledge gender diversity. In the past, President Trump signed an executive order aimed at cutting federal support for gender transitions for individuals under the age of 19.

Recent directives from the Office of Personnel Management have instructed federal employees to remove pronouns from their email signatures and to withdraw any materials that promote “gender ideology.” This has raised concerns among researchers like Nathaniel Tran, an assistant professor of health policy at the University of Illinois at Chicago, who fear that the removal of such data will create significant gaps in our understanding of important health trends.

Overall, the removal of data related to sexual orientation, gender identity, and other critical information has raised alarm bells within the research community. Many experts are calling for transparency and the preservation of valuable data to ensure that evidence-based policies and interventions can continue to be developed and implemented effectively. When it comes to living a more sustainable lifestyle, there are many things that we can do in order to reduce our carbon footprint and help protect the environment. One of the key ways that we can do this is by implementing sustainable practices in our everyday lives. From reducing our use of single-use plastics to conserving energy and water, there are many simple changes that we can make that can have a big impact on the planet.

One of the first steps that we can take towards living more sustainably is to reduce our use of single-use plastics. This includes items such as plastic bags, straws, and water bottles, which have a significant impact on the environment due to their long decomposition time and the harm they cause to wildlife. By opting for reusable alternatives, such as cloth bags, metal straws, and refillable water bottles, we can significantly reduce the amount of plastic waste that we generate.

Another important way that we can live more sustainably is by conserving energy and water in our homes. This can be done through simple actions such as turning off lights and unplugging electronics when they are not in use, using energy-efficient appliances, and taking shorter showers. By reducing our energy and water consumption, we can help to reduce our carbon footprint and lessen the strain on the planet’s resources.

In addition to making changes in our own lives, we can also support businesses and organizations that are committed to sustainability. This includes purchasing products from companies that use eco-friendly materials and practices, supporting local farmers and businesses, and advocating for policies that promote sustainability at a local and national level. By choosing to support sustainable businesses and initiatives, we can help to create a more sustainable future for all.

Overall, living a more sustainable lifestyle is not only beneficial for the environment, but also for our own health and well-being. By making small changes in our everyday lives, we can make a big impact on the planet and help to ensure a brighter future for future generations. So let’s all do our part to live more sustainably and protect the planet for years to come.
