Sam Altman: OpenAI has been on the ‘wrong side of history’ concerning open source

OpenAI Addresses Questions in Reddit AMA Following Product Releases

After a day of product releases, OpenAI held a Reddit AMA session with researchers, engineers, and executives, including CEO Sam Altman, to address a variety of topics. One of the main points of discussion was OpenAI’s position in the AI race, particularly in light of competition from Chinese companies like DeepSeek, which OpenAI has accused of stealing its IP.

Altman acknowledged that DeepSeek has diminished OpenAI’s lead in AI and expressed a willingness to reconsider the company’s approach to open-sourcing its technologies. While OpenAI has traditionally favored a closed-source development model, Altman hinted at a potential shift towards a more open-source strategy in the future.

In response to questions about the transparency of OpenAI’s reasoning models, Altman and Weil hinted at plans to reveal more about how these models work, potentially allowing users to see the model’s “thought process.” This move would align OpenAI more closely with DeepSeek, whose reasoning model, R1, is known for its transparency.

Regarding pricing, Altman reassured users that OpenAI’s ChatGPT app, which serves as a platform for launching AI models, may become more affordable over time. This comes after concerns about the cost of the ChatGPT Pro plan, which was reportedly causing financial losses for OpenAI.

On the technical front, Altman provided updates on upcoming models from OpenAI, including the o3 reasoning model and the GPT-5 flagship model. He also mentioned plans for a successor to DALL-E 3, OpenAI’s image-generating model, which is now considered outdated compared to newer technologies in the field.

One point of contention raised during the AMA was the use of AI models for potentially harmful purposes, such as developing destructive weapons. Weil defended OpenAI’s partnership with the U.S. government for nuclear defense research, emphasizing the expertise and caution of the scientists involved in the project.

Overall, the Reddit AMA provided valuable insights into OpenAI’s current initiatives and future plans, showcasing the company’s commitment to innovation and transparency in the AI industry.
