William McMichael, the coach at Detroit’s Mumford High School, found himself in the spotlight after offering a position to Connor Stalions, the controversial figure at the center of Michigan’s sign-stealing scandal and the subject of an upcoming Netflix documentary. Despite McMichael’s insistence that he wasn’t seeking publicity, the news of Stalions joining the coaching staff at Mumford garnered nationwide attention.

Before Stalions landed at Mumford, he was in talks to become the defensive coordinator at Berkley High School, a struggling program outside of Detroit. However, the potential hiring of Stalions sparked a firestorm of controversy within the school district. Email exchanges revealed the back-and-forth between district officials, the coach, and Stalions as they navigated the fallout from the ongoing NCAA investigation into the sign-stealing scandal.

The NCAA has been investigating allegations against Stalions since October, accusing him of orchestrating a scheme to steal opposing teams’ signals and clandestinely appearing on the sidelines during games. The scandal led to the dismissal of several coaches at Michigan, including linebackers coach Chris Partridge and head coach Sherrone Moore, who faced allegations of deleting incriminating text messages.

Despite Stalions’ attempts to clear his name and prove his innocence, his hiring at Berkley High School was ultimately blocked by district officials concerned about the negative attention it could bring. Stalions, however, believed he had been hired and continued to work with the team, leading to a series of heated exchanges and misunderstandings between him and the school administration.

In a dramatic turn of events, Stalions eventually found a new home at Mumford High School, where he joined the coaching staff as a volunteer defensive coordinator. Despite the controversy surrounding him, McMichael saw potential in Stalions’ coaching abilities and welcomed him to the team.

As Stalions prepares for his coaching debut at Mumford, the specter of the Netflix documentary looms large. Titled “Sign Stealer,” the film promises to shed light on Stalions’ side of the story and his impact on college football. With the support of the Mumford community, Stalions is gearing up for a fresh start and a chance to prove himself on the field.

The saga of Connor Stalions and the Michigan sign-stealing scandal continues to unfold, leaving a trail of controversy and intrigue in its wake. As Stalions embarks on this new chapter at Mumford High School, all eyes will be on him as he seeks redemption and a second chance in the world of football.
