Five stars, seven figures, zero eligibility: Why are the Bewley twins still paying?

The scene at the Lemerand Center in Daytona Beach, Florida, on a chilly Wednesday night in January was anything but ordinary. A junior college men’s basketball game was in progress, but the real action was happening off the court. An altercation between the Daytona State College and Santa Fe College women’s basketball teams had security scrambling to defuse the situation. Tempers flared, fingers pointed, and words were exchanged as players from both teams clashed in a heated confrontation.

The chaos stemmed from a tie-up during the first half of the game, which escalated into a physical altercation involving Daytona State’s Ryan Bewley defending his brother, Matt, from an opposing player. The tension was palpable, and the atmosphere was charged with emotion as players and spectators alike were caught up in the unfolding drama.

But what made this situation even more remarkable was the presence of Matt and Ryan Bewley, two former top basketball prospects who had taken an unconventional path to get to this point. Once heralded as future NBA stars, the Bewley twins had signed with Overtime Elite, a new venture offering elite high school athletes an alternative to traditional education and amateur sports. However, after two years with Overtime Elite, the Bewleys found themselves in a predicament. They were not ready for the NBA, and their NCAA eligibility was in question due to their involvement with the program.

Despite the setbacks and legal battles with the NCAA, the Bewleys were determined to continue pursuing their basketball dreams. They landed at Chicago State University but were ultimately ruled ineligible to play college basketball. Faced with limited options, the twins decided to transfer to Daytona State College, a junior college with a strong basketball program and a supportive coach in Joey Cantens.

The Bewleys’ arrival at Daytona State marked a new chapter in their basketball journey. No longer the highly touted prospects they once were, they had to prove themselves on the court and earn their place on the team. Despite the challenges and uncertainties, the twins embraced the opportunity to play competitive basketball again and were determined to make the most of their time at Daytona State.

As they navigated the ups and downs of junior college basketball, the Bewleys remained focused on their ultimate goal of playing professionally. They knew they had a long road ahead of them, but they were willing to put in the work and make the most of their second chance.

The story of Matt and Ryan Bewley is one of resilience, determination, and a relentless pursuit of their dreams. Despite the obstacles they have faced, the twins remain committed to proving themselves on the court and showing the world what they are capable of. And as they continue their basketball journey at Daytona State College, they are determined to claw their way to the top, one game at a time.
