Trump and Putin Discuss Ending War in Ukraine

As the Trump administration continues to make significant progress on various fronts, the focus on improving bilateral relations with Russia and bringing an end to the war in Ukraine remains a top priority.

President Trump has recently disclosed that discussions with Russia are underway and that both he and Russian President Vladimir Putin are considering taking substantial actions to resolve the Ukrainian conflict and restore peace between the two nuclear powers.

Reports from the Associated Press indicate:

“We will be speaking, and I think will perhaps do something that’ll be significant,’ Trump said in an exchange with reporters in the Oval Office. ‘We want to end that war. That war would have not started if I was president’.

President Trump did not reveal the specific individuals from his administration who have been in contact with the Russians but emphasized that dialogue between the two sides is already underway. When asked if he has personally spoken with President Putin, Trump remained elusive, stating, ‘I don’t want to say that’.

President Trump has been vocal about his belief that the conflict in Ukraine would not have escalated if he had been in office. He criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for not negotiating a deal with Putin to prevent the conflict.

“The president in a Fox News interview earlier in January ridiculed Zelensky as ‘talking so brave’, when Ukraine was so dependent on U.S. aid to fight its war. ‘They were brave, but we gave them billions of dollars’, Trump said.”

Trum and Putin could soon take ‘significant’ action toward ending the Ukrainian conflict and reestablishing peace between the nuclear powers.

In a recent statement on Russian state television, President Putin praised President Trump as a ‘clever and pragmatic man’ who prioritizes U.S. interests.

“We always had a business-like, pragmatic but also trusting relationship with the current U.S. president’, Putin said. ‘I couldn’t disagree with him that if he had been president, if they hadn’t stolen victory from him in 2020, the crisis that emerged in Ukraine in 2022 could have been avoided’.”

Putin’s endorsement of Trump’s claims of election fraud in 2020 was unexpected but highlights the positive relationship between the two leaders.
