Elon Musk’s DOGE commission gains access to sensitive Treasury payment systems: AP sources

WASHINGTON — The Department of Government Efficiency, overseen by President Donald Trump’s advisor Elon Musk, has reportedly gained access to sensitive Treasury data, including Social Security and Medicare payment systems, according to sources familiar with the matter.

The group, known as DOGE, is tasked with finding ways to streamline government operations, reduce federal workforce, and cut regulations, potentially giving them broad access to crucial taxpayer information.

The New York Times initially broke the story about the group’s access to the federal payment system. Speaking on condition of anonymity, two sources confirmed to The Associated Press.

Senator Ron Wyden expressed concern in a letter to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent that individuals associated with Musk may be attempting to misuse the payment systems for political purposes.

Treasury’s acting Deputy Secretary David Lebryk resigned following a request from Musk’s DOGE organization for access to sensitive Treasury data.

Musk responded to reports about Lebryk’s departure by alleging that payment officers were instructed to approve payments without question, even to questionable groups, without providing evidence.

DOGE, originally led by Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, aimed to make significant budget cuts and reduce federal bureaucracy, with Ramaswamy later leaving the group to consider a run for governor of Ohio.
