Cyndi Lauper’s rapper son files for bankruptcy just days before sex assault lawsuit mediation

Cyndi Lauper’s son, Declyn “Dex” Lauper Thornton, is facing legal troubles once again as he filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy protection just days before a scheduled mediation hearing in an ongoing civil case. The move, which was deemed as “convenient” by the lawyer representing the woman suing him for an alleged sexual assault, raises suspicions about potential delays in the civil case as the assets are sold off by a court-appointed trustee to pay back creditors in Chapter 7 proceedings.

Attorney Mark Shirian, who represents the anonymous woman who sued Lauper Thornton back in May, expressed concerns about the timing of the bankruptcy filing, which could potentially derail the civil suit pending against him. The scheduled hearing to discuss a resolution for the case now hangs in uncertainty as the bankruptcy filing may lead to a stay in proceedings.

The allegations against Lauper Thornton involve pressuring a woman to perform oral sex at his SoHo home in November 2020, which escalated into physical assault as he allegedly held her down and forced himself upon her. The victim, who had been in an on-and-off relationship with Lauper Thornton, detailed the incident in the lawsuit, citing a disagreement over a sexual act that led to physical violence.

In addition to the legal troubles, Lauper Thornton is also facing eviction from his $7,200-a-month apartment in the Financial District. With prior arrests for theft and gun possession charges, his criminal record adds to the ongoing legal battles he is entangled in. A previous incident in July 2022, where he was arrested for double-parking a stolen Mercedes at a memorial event, resulted in a plea deal that spared him from jail time.

Despite the mounting legal challenges, Lauper Thornton’s whereabouts remain unknown as a working phone number couldn’t be found for him. The troubled rapper, son of the iconic singer Cyndi Lauper and actor David Thornton, continues to face a series of legal battles that raise questions about his future and the outcomes of the ongoing civil case against him.
