Take the Final Nail Out of the Coffin: Election Denial Isn’t Dead

Election Denialism: A Lingering Threat to Democracy

Following the 2024 general election, many hailed the process as free, fair, and secure. Despite some fringe conspiracy theories circulating on social media, the overall consensus was that the election was conducted without major issues. Arizona’s Secretary of State Andrian Fontes even declared that the era of election denialism was over. However, recent events suggest that election denialism is far from dead and may continue to pose a threat to the democratic process.

Instances of election denialism have persisted, with President Trump’s nominee for Attorney General refusing to acknowledge Biden’s victory in the 2020 election. Furthermore, appointments of known election deniers, such as Ashley Moody, to key positions indicate a concerning trend. President Trump himself has continued to propagate claims of election fraud, casting doubt on the legitimacy of the electoral process.

The underlying factors driving election denialism, including disinformation, voter challenges, and partisan manipulation, remain prevalent. Research indicates that beliefs in election fraud are influenced by factors such as conspiratorial thinking, populist attitudes, and racial resentment. These factors have fueled election denialism across party lines, with Republicans, Independents, and Democrats all susceptible to such beliefs.

In North Carolina, a legal battle over a state supreme court race highlights the ongoing challenges posed by election denialism. Republican candidate Jefferson Griffin has contested the results, seeking to disqualify thousands of mail-in ballots that heavily favor his opponent. The case has raised concerns about democratic backsliding and the potential disenfranchisement of certain voter demographics.

To combat election denialism, greater transparency in election data is essential. By making election processes more accessible and accountable, public trust in the electoral system can be strengthened. State and local officials must ensure that all valid votes are counted and take steps to address any potential issues with ballot verification.

As election denialism continues to threaten the integrity of elections, vigilance and proactive measures are needed to safeguard democracy. By addressing disinformation, promoting transparency, and upholding the principles of fair elections, we can protect the foundation of our democratic society.
