A stunning oil sketch by the celebrated British landscape artist John Constable has recently surfaced and is set to be auctioned off. The artwork, dating back to the early 19th century, portrays Dedham Vale, a picturesque valley located northeast of London. Believed to be a preliminary version of Constable’s renowned 1815 painting “View of Dedham Vale From East Bergholt,” the 12- by 15-inch sketch is expected to fetch up to £200,000 (approximately $250,000) at Tennants Auctioneers next month.

Constable, born in 1776, honed his painting skills under the tutelage of a Suffolk plumber and amateur artist during his youth. Immersed in the natural beauty of the countryside surrounding his childhood home, he developed a deep appreciation for capturing the essence of rural landscapes. This early exposure to the idyllic scenes of nature laid the foundation for Constable’s artistic journey. His time at the Royal Academy Schools in 1802 marked the beginning of his departure from traditional landscape painting techniques in favor of a more naturalistic approach guided by his observations of the world around him.

The oil sketch up for auction showcases Constable’s vibrant and expressive style, capturing the essence of Dedham Vale with dynamic light and shade. Executed during the early stages of his illustrious career, the sketch exudes a sense of vitality and masterful handling of light and shadow. Experts have placed the creation of the artwork between 1809 and 1814, noting its dramatic use of light and shade that sets it apart from other works of the same period.

Jane Tennant, director and auctioneer at Tennants, highlighted the significance of the sketch as a glimpse into Constable’s artistic evolution. The piece offers a unique perspective on the artist’s process, potentially serving as a preliminary study for his later painting “View of Dedham Vale From East Bergholt.” Constable’s deep emotional connection to the landscapes he painted is evident in his writings, where he expressed a profound sense of gratitude towards the natural world that inspired his art.

Dubbed “Constable Country” for its association with the artist, Dedham Vale holds a special place in Constable’s heart, serving as a recurring motif in his body of work. The upcoming auction of this rare oil sketch by Constable has generated excitement within the art world, offering collectors and enthusiasts a rare opportunity to own a piece of the artist’s legacy.

The discovery of this previously unknown sketch by John Constable sheds new light on his early artistic endeavors and provides a captivating glimpse into the creative process of one of Britain’s most beloved landscape painters. As the auction approaches, art lovers and collectors eagerly await the opportunity to acquire this remarkable piece of art history.
