Upon hearing that the Grammys had decided not to postpone their ceremony in the wake of the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles, I was disgusted. Lives were lost, communities destroyed, and thousands left displaced. The idea of an extravagant award show taking place while so many were suffering felt insensitive and out of touch.

Despite my initial reluctance, I found myself watching the show with my 13-year-old daughter who was excited to see her favorite artists perform. It turned out to be a bonding experience, and I was pleasantly surprised by the performances of artists like Doechii, Chappell Roan, Raye, Billie Eilish, and Sabrina Carpenter.

One performance that particularly moved me was Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas singing “Birds of a Feather” against the backdrop of the charred canyons where the Eaton Fire began. The emotional impact of the visuals and their heartfelt performance brought tears to my eyes.

Although I never expected it, the Grammys turned out to be a therapeutic experience for me. The collective acknowledgment of the community’s pain and the generous fundraising efforts made me feel like I had a place at the table of grief.
