On February 3, 2013, during Super Bowl XLVII between the San Francisco 49ers and Baltimore Ravens, a sudden power outage caused chaos at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans. Steve Tasker, the sideline reporter for the game, was the first to break the news to viewers when the audio cut out early in the third quarter. Tasker informed the world that half the power in the stadium had gone out, bringing the game to a standstill for 34 minutes.

The Ravens, who were leading 28-6 at the time of the outage, initially suspected foul play. Linebacker Ray Lewis even suggested a conspiracy, believing that someone may have orchestrated the blackout to disrupt the game’s momentum. However, the actual cause was a malfunctioning relay device that automatically cut power when the amperage exceeded a certain level.

Entergy, the local electric company, has since made improvements to prevent a similar incident from occurring during future events at the Superdome. The stadium has successfully hosted numerous games and concerts without any power disruptions since the blackout in 2013.

While the 49ers and Ravens dealt with the unexpected delay differently, both teams used the time to regroup and strategize for the remainder of the game. The extended halftime, due to the blackout, provided the 49ers with an opportunity to address their gameplay and make necessary adjustments. However, the Ravens, who had been dominating the game, struggled to maintain their momentum after the break.

As the game resumed, the 49ers staged a remarkable comeback, scoring multiple touchdowns to narrow the Ravens’ lead. The game turned into a high-scoring affair, with both teams fighting fiercely for the win. In the end, the Ravens managed to hold off the 49ers’ late surge and emerged victorious with a final score of 34-31.

Despite the temporary chaos caused by the blackout, the Super Bowl XLVII will always be remembered for its thrilling twists and turns. Tasker, the unlikely hero of the broadcast during the outage, found humor in being portrayed on “Saturday Night Live” following the incident. The power outage may have disrupted the game, but it added an unforgettable chapter to the history of the Super Bowl.
