Washington:

The United States has approved the sale of over $7.4 billion in bombs, missiles, and related equipment to Israel, enabling the country to enhance its defense capabilities. The State Department has authorized the sale of $6.75 billion worth of bombs, guidance kits, and fuses, along with $660 million in Hellfire missiles, as confirmed by the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA).

This proposed sale aims to bolster Israel’s ability to address current and future threats, fortify its homeland defense, and act as a deterrent against regional adversaries, according to the DSCA statement.

Additionally, the missile sale will enhance Israel’s capacity to counter threats by empowering the Israeli Air Force to protect the nation’s borders, critical infrastructure, and population centers.

Following a significant offensive against Hamas in Gaza in October 2023 in response to an attack by the Palestinian militant group, much of Gaza has been devastated, leading to mass displacement of its inhabitants. However, a ceasefire has been in effect since last month, bringing an end to the conflict and facilitating the release of hostages held by Hamas.

Former President Joe Biden’s administration had initially halted a shipment of 2,000-pound bombs to Israel due to concerns about civilian casualties. However, it was reported that his successor, Donald Trump, approved the shipment upon returning to office.

While the State Department has given the green light for the sale of bombs and missiles, final approval from Congress is still pending. Nonetheless, it is unlikely that Congress will impede the provision of these weapons to Israel, the closest ally of the United States in the Middle East.
