The Trump administration continues its crackdown on criminal migrants in New York, with 100 offenders apprehended in the first week alone. These individuals include kidnappers, sexual assaulters, murderers, and members of the Tren de Aragua gang. While this effort should be celebrated for removing dangerous individuals from our communities, there is pushback from some Albany politicians.

A proposed bill called the “New York For All Act” seeks to establish sanctuary policies that would hinder cooperation between state and federal authorities. This legislation would prevent state employees from inquiring about immigration status or sharing information with ICE, as well as restrict federal employees from accessing certain areas of state buildings without a judicial warrant. Additionally, the use of public resources for immigration enforcement would be prohibited, including by law enforcement officers.

One concerning case is that of Jesus Romero-Hernandez, a Mexican migrant released from Tompkins County jail despite having a federal warrant for his arrest. If such sanctuary policies are enacted, more individuals like him could evade justice. While some of these policies are already in place due to past executive orders, Governor Hochul has the power to overturn them.

It is crucial for Governor Hochul to prioritize public safety over political agendas and veto the “New York For All Act” if necessary. By standing against sanctuary policies and supporting cooperation with ICE to remove violent criminals from the state, she can ensure the wellbeing of New Yorkers. It is not a matter open for debate; the safety of the community must come first.
