NFL Continues Pushing Flag Football Agenda Despite Backlash
Despite the current administration in the White House, corporate America, particularly the NFL, continues to push its agenda on the American public. In 2023, the NFL attempted to promote flag football during a Super Bowl ad titled “Run With It.” Fast forward two years, and the league is doubling down on this gimmick.
This year’s two-minute ad, titled “NFL Flag 50,” aired after halftime and focused on promoting girls’ and women’s flag football. The ad is set in a stereotypical 1980s high school, featuring flag football player Ki’Lolo Westerlund as the “new girl” who disrupts the male-dominated sports scene. The ad includes appearances from various personalities and players, all set to the tune of the Scorpions’ “Rock You Like a Hurricane.”
The ad concludes with a message urging for girls’ flag football to become a varsity sport in all 50 states. The NFL is pushing for flag football to be seen as a cultural moment and a significant sports movement.
In an interview with AdWeek, Marissa Solis, SVP of global brand and marketing for the NFL, stated that the focus this time around is on the personal journey of young female athletes and making flag football an official high school sport.
While the ad may have been a highlight for some viewers, the actual game saw the Philadelphia Eagles delivering a stunning performance, defeating the Kansas City Chiefs and denying them a chance at a record-breaking third consecutive Super Bowl title. The halftime show, featuring Kendrick Lamar, was met with mixed reviews and widespread disapproval from viewers.
Despite the mixed reactions and controversies surrounding the Super Bowl, the NFL remains steadfast in its commitment to promoting flag football and empowering female athletes in the sport.
