Drunken Truck Driver Causes Chaos on Long Island Expressway

A chaotic scene unfolded on the Long Island Expressway on Monday night when a drunken truck driver crashed his 18-wheeler into a guardrail, leaving a trail of destruction in his path. The driver, identified as Timothy Murray, 64, of Mastic, was behind the wheel of a 2016 Freightliner tractor pulling a trailer when the incident occurred in Dix Hills, according to Suffolk County Police.

Reports indicate that Murray veered off the roadway at the right shoulder, ultimately colliding with the guardrail before coming to a stop east of the Exit 50 off-ramp around 7:45 p.m. The impact of the crash left several hundred feet of twisted metal and two lamp poles knocked down in the aftermath.

The crash not only resulted in the destruction of the guardrail and lamp poles but also led to another vehicle becoming disabled as it passed over the debris strewn across the roadway. The ensuing cleanup operation required the closure of two lanes of the westbound expressway for over six hours as responders worked to clear the wreckage and contain approximately 50 gallons of spilled diesel fuel.

Following the incident, Murray was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated. He is set to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Tuesday to face the consequences of his reckless actions.
