A brave Virginia man outsmarted two armed thieves during a home invasion with the help of his loyal dog in July 2023. The incident involved James Davis Kennedy, 41, and an accomplice who posed as a utility worker to gain entry into the victim’s Norfolk home.
The robbers managed to enter the home by tricking the victim into believing they were there to check for a gas leak. Once inside, Kennedy brandished a gun and forced the victim to the floor. However, the victim’s dog quickly sensed danger and started barking loudly, causing a distraction.
Taking advantage of the chaos, the victim convinced the thieves that he needed to take the dog outside to calm him down. While outside, the victim noticed that the thieves had left their getaway car running on the street. Seizing the opportunity, he jumped into the car and drove around the corner to call the police.
The stolen getaway car led authorities back to Kennedy, as he had left his ID and cellphone inside the vehicle. The robbers were forced to flee on foot, leaving behind the stolen cash and valuables they had taken from the home. Kennedy was later sentenced to 22 years in prison for armed robbery.
During the home invasion, a roommate sleeping upstairs was also confronted by one of the robbers pointing a gun at him. The breed, name, and age of the hero dog involved in the incident were not immediately disclosed.
Commonwealth’s Attorney Ramin Fatehi emphasized the dangerous and frightening nature of home-invasion robberies, highlighting the potential for violence, injury, or even death. The victim’s quick thinking and the loyal dog’s bravery played a crucial role in thwarting the robbery and ensuring the safety of those involved.
