Tasman police have announced a renewed effort in investigating a cold case from over 26 years ago in the quiet town of Kakapotahi on the West Coast.

A homicide inquiry began on December 28, 1998, following the discovery of the body of David John Robinson, who was 25 years old at the time, on a secluded beach near Ross.

Detective Inspector Geoff Baber revealed that Robinson had been killed around 10 days before his body was found. His belongings were found scattered on the beach, suggesting he had been staying in the area before his death.

Despite extensive investigations, including interviews with locals and searches of the surrounding areas, the case eventually went cold. However, police have periodically revisited the case and are committed to uncovering the truth behind Robinson’s death.

Baber expressed the importance of finding closure for Robinson’s family and the community, emphasizing that it’s never too late to come forward with information. He encouraged anyone with knowledge about the case to reach out to the authorities.

As the investigation reopens, police will be conducting further inquiries in the Kakapotahi area. Individuals can provide tips by submitting information through the police website’s cold case form or by calling 105 and referencing case number 231129/2221.

The passing of time may have prompted witnesses to come forward with new perspectives on the case, offering hope for answers in a mystery that has haunted the community for decades.
