OnePlus Puts Foldable Plans on Hold for 2025
OnePlus has announced that the rumored OnePlus Open 2 foldable phone will not be released in 2025. Product Manager, Vale G., shared this news in a post titled ‘A Note About Our Foldable Strategy for 2025 – Recalibrating for Innovation’. The company has decided to pause the release of a foldable device this year.
Pausing, not stopping
Vale reassured fans that this decision does not mean OnePlus is abandoning the foldable category altogether. Despite not releasing a foldable device this year, OnePlus remains committed to the segment and may return in the future.
Interestingly, OnePlus’ decision to hold off on a foldable launch coincides with Oppo’s unveiling of the Oppo Find N5, which many believed would serve as the basis for the OnePlus Open 2.
Oppo’s Find N5 is set to launch soon, offering a glimpse into what could have been the successor to the OnePlus Open. This move by OnePlus allows Oppo to take the spotlight in the foldable market for now.
Taking off the pressure
Vale praised Oppo’s Find N5, highlighting the collaboration between OnePlus and Oppo in product development. With OnePlus stepping back, Samsung faces one less competitor in the foldable space for 2025.
Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 7 is anticipated to focus on software innovations rather than significant hardware upgrades. The absence of the OnePlus Open 2 gives Samsung a clear path in the foldable market.
OnePlus’ foldable future
With no OnePlus foldable in 2025, speculation arises about the brand’s next move in the foldable segment. If OnePlus returns in 2026, it will enter a market shaped by competitors like Samsung, Google, Honor, Xiaomi, Vivo, and Oppo.
The design of OnePlus’ future foldable device may be influenced by Oppo’s Find N5 and potential future models. The evolution of the foldable market will dictate OnePlus’ strategy when it re-enters the segment.
