Christchurch Hospital’s Emergency Department (ED) is currently facing challenges in managing the high number of patients seeking medical treatment. The department is urging individuals to consider alternative healthcare options unless their condition is life-threatening due to the overwhelming influx of patients.

According to a report by the New Zealand Herald, the wait times at Christchurch Hospital’s ED are among the longest in the country, with two-thirds of patients not being seen within recommended timeframes. The hospital saw a significant increase in patient visits between January and June last year, with nearly 77 percent of the 65,570 patients experiencing delays in receiving care.

In a recent social media post, the hospital emphasized the extreme busyness of the emergency department and requested individuals with non-urgent medical needs to seek treatment elsewhere to alleviate the strain on the department. Patients requiring immediate medical attention or facing life-threatening situations were advised to visit the ED or contact emergency services.

Despite efforts to prioritize urgent cases, patients with non-urgent conditions were informed to expect prolonged waiting times for evaluation and treatment. Additionally, the neonatal unit at Christchurch Hospital is also experiencing capacity issues, leading to high-risk pregnancy cases being redirected to other medical facilities such as Dunedin.

Health New Zealand Te Whatu Ora has been reached out to for comments on the situation.
