Security leaders and Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs) are facing a new challenge in the form of shadow AI apps infiltrating their networks without their knowledge. These apps, created by well-meaning employees without oversight from IT and security departments, are being used for various purposes like automating tasks and streamlining data analysis using generative AI.

What exactly is shadow AI, and why is it becoming more prevalent in organizations? Shadow AI refers to AI applications that are developed and used within a company without proper authorization or security measures in place. These unauthorized apps pose significant risks such as data breaches, compliance violations, and damage to the company’s reputation.

According to industry experts, the allure of shadow AI lies in its ability to boost productivity and efficiency, allowing employees to accomplish more in less time. However, the use of these unsanctioned AI solutions can lead to serious consequences, as highlighted by Vineet Arora, CTO at WinWire, who has witnessed departments adopting shadow AI apps due to their immediate benefits.

Prompt Security’s CEO and co-founder, Itamar Golan, revealed that they are discovering an increasing number of shadow AI apps in their clients’ organizations, with around 40% of these apps training on sensitive company data. The proliferation of shadow AI is further supported by a Software AG survey, which found that 75% of knowledge workers are already using AI tools, and 46% are unwilling to give them up even if prohibited by their employer.

The rapid growth of shadow AI poses a significant threat to businesses, as these unauthorized apps can unknowingly leak sensitive data and compromise security measures. Traditional IT frameworks are ill-equipped to detect and manage shadow AI, making it essential for organizations to implement centralized AI governance to mitigate these risks.

To address the challenges posed by shadow AI, companies are advised to conduct formal audits to identify unauthorized AI usage, establish an Office of Responsible AI for policy-making and risk assessments, deploy AI-aware security controls, maintain a centralized AI inventory and catalog, mandate employee training on safe AI use, integrate with governance, risk, and compliance processes, and provide legitimate AI solutions with clear guidelines for responsible use.

By adopting a comprehensive AI governance strategy, organizations can harness the benefits of AI technology securely while safeguarding corporate data and ensuring compliance. Rather than banning shadow AI outright, proactive measures can empower employees to leverage AI’s transformative power while maintaining security and compliance standards.
