About 100 individuals gathered in a snowstorm near the east entrance of Rocky Mountain National Park on Monday morning to protest a federal hiring freeze that could impact operations at one of Colorado’s most renowned destinations.

Protesters displayed signs and rallied on the roadside, with one man being arrested during an altercation with park rangers, although it was unrelated to the protest, as reported by the Estes Park Trail-Gazette.

Among the protesters was an individual dressed in a Sasquatch costume and park ranger vest, while others chanted “This is what democracy looks like” and “Save our parks,” as shown in photos and videos shared online.

A flyer promoting the protest on the Friends of Rocky Mountain National Park Facebook group emphasized the show of support for the National Parks Service and federal workers.

“Massive staffing shortages and layoffs are endangering the future of Rocky Mountain National Park and the jobs of those who maintain it,” organizers stated. “The park, the community, and the visitors who treasure this national gem will all be affected.”

In a statement to the Trail-Gazette, National Parks Service officials acknowledged the implementation of President Donald Trump’s hiring freeze executive order, stating that they are evaluating critical staffing needs for park operations and working to fill key positions for the upcoming season.
