Artificial intelligence is revolutionizing the way data is processed, creating a high demand for efficient data handling solutions. A startup based in Mountain View, Voltron Data, is addressing a crucial yet often overlooked challenge in AI – the rapid movement and transformation of large datasets.

Today, Voltron Data announced a strategic partnership with Accenture, a major player in the industry. The company has developed Theseus, a GPU-accelerated analytics engine that enables organizations to process massive amounts of data at unprecedented speeds using graphics processing units (GPUs) instead of traditional computer processors (CPUs).

Michael Abbott, who leads Accenture’s banking and capital markets practice, emphasized the importance of efficient data handling for successful AI implementation. He stated, “To make AI work, you’ve got to move data around at a speed and pace you just never had to before.”

Building for the AI tsunami: Why traditional data processing won’t cut it

As companies adopt generative AI technologies, they are realizing that their existing data infrastructure is not equipped to handle the massive volume and velocity of data required. This challenge is expected to intensify as AI becomes more prevalent in enterprise operations.

Rodrigo Aramburu, CTO and co-founder of Voltron Data, highlighted the increasing demand for data analytics and cloud infrastructure. He explained, “If CIOs and CTOs are already saying they spend way too much on data analytics and cloud infrastructure, and the demand is about to step function higher, then we need a step function down in the cost of running those queries.”

From 1,400 servers to 14: Early adopters see dramatic results

Early adopters of Theseus, including a large retailer, have seen significant improvements in data processing efficiency. By leveraging the Apache Arrow framework for efficient data movement, Theseus complements existing platforms like Snowflake and Databricks, accelerating data processing without the need for a complete overhaul of existing systems.

Voltron Data’s technology has been particularly well-received in data-intensive industries such as financial services, where applications include fraud detection, risk modeling, and regulatory compliance. One retailer was able to reduce its server count from 1,400 CPU machines to just 14 GPU servers after implementing Theseus.

Turning the GPU shortage into an opportunity

Despite the current GPU shortage driven by AI demand, Voltron Data has identified opportunities to repurpose underutilized GPU infrastructure for data processing. Theseus can effectively run on older GPU generations, maximizing the use of available hardware resources.

For industries like banking, where valuable data is often trapped in unstructured formats, Voltron Data’s technology offers a solution to unlock and process this data efficiently. With the potential to significantly improve data processing efficiency compared to standard CPUs, Theseus presents a powerful tool for accelerating AI initiatives.

As organizations navigate the data challenges posed by AI, solutions that enhance data processing speed and reduce infrastructure costs are becoming increasingly vital. Through its partnership with Accenture, Voltron Data aims to reach more enterprises facing these challenges while providing Accenture’s clients with technology that can enhance the performance and efficiency of their AI initiatives.
