Remembering the Heroes of the Battle of Iwo Jima

As we look back on the events of February 19, 1945, we are reminded of the brave men who fought and sacrificed their lives during one of the most significant campaigns of the Second World War. The Battle of Iwo Jima was a fierce and relentless conflict that tested the resolve and courage of the United States Marines.

From the moment the first wave of Marines landed on the island, they were met with heavy resistance from the Japanese forces. Despite facing mortars, artillery, and a constant barrage of small arms fire, the Marines stood their ground and refused to retreat. The iconic moment when six Marines raised the American flag on Mount Suribachi symbolizes the unwavering determination and spirit of the American forces.

After 36 days of intense fighting, the island was declared secure, but not without a heavy toll. Nearly 7,000 Marines and Sailors lost their lives, and 20,000 more were wounded during the campaign. The Battle of Iwo Jima was marked by both tremendous casualties and acts of incredible bravery, with 27 Marines and Sailors receiving the Medal of Honor for their valor.

Today, we honor the legacy of those who fought and died on the black sand shores of Iwo Jima. Their sacrifice secured American liberty and paved the way for the United States–Japan Alliance, a cornerstone of peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region. The victory at Iwo Jima remains a testament to the courage and fortitude of America’s Greatest Generation.

On this 80th Anniversary of the Battle of Iwo Jima, let us remember the selfless patriots who gave their all for freedom. Their noble devotion and sacrifice will never be forgotten. As we reflect on their legacy, we are reminded of the debt of gratitude we owe to those who have served and continue to serve our nation.

As President of the United States, I hereby proclaim February 19, 2025, as a day to honor the heroes of Iwo Jima. I encourage all Americans to pay tribute to the brave men who fought and died for our freedom. Let us never forget their courage and sacrifice, and strive to build a future worthy of their legacy.

May we always remember the heroes of Iwo Jima and uphold the values for which they so bravely fought.
