House Democrats are stepping up their efforts to combat corruption within the Executive Branch, despite not holding the majority in Congress. While they may not have the power to conduct official committee hearings and call witnesses, they are utilizing their oversight and investigative authority to demand answers.

A group of Democratic representatives, including Rep. Jamie Raskin, Rep. Gerald E. Connolly, Rep. Lucy McBath, and Rep. Summer Lee, recently penned a letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi expressing their concerns about the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) recent actions. The letter highlighted the DOJ’s removal and reassignment of key leaders in the Public Integrity Section, the halting of enforcement of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA), and the disbanding of anti-kleptocracy initiatives aimed at targeting and seizing assets of corrupt foreign actors.

In particular, the representatives raised alarm over the resignation of eight veteran career prosecutors who refused to follow what they deemed as illegal orders to dismiss corruption charges against New York City Mayor Eric Adams. They accused the Trump administration and DOJ of launching an unprecedented assault on laws, government agencies, and individuals fighting against corruption.

Despite President Trump’s rhetoric about rooting out corruption and fraud, the actions taken by his administration paint a different picture. Instead of upholding the rule of law and combating corruption, the DOJ’s recent moves have hindered efforts to hold corrupt individuals accountable and protect the integrity of government institutions.

As House Democrats continue to push for transparency and accountability, it is clear that the fight against corruption will remain a top priority for those committed to upholding the principles of justice and integrity in government. By shining a light on these concerning developments, lawmakers are sending a strong message that no one is above the law, and that corruption will not be tolerated in any form.
