Accused UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson shooter Luigi Mangione made an appearance at a Manhattan court today, February 21, marking his first hearing since his December arraignment. Mangione, whose image has become a symbol of resistance against the flaws in America’s healthcare system, was captured in courtroom sketches by renowned artist Jane Rosenberg.

The once viral hysteria surrounding Mangione’s likeness has subsided since his last public appearance. However, the memory of his dramatic perp walk, attended by Mayor Eric Adams and compared to the crucifixion of Jesus Christ on social media, still lingers.

In today’s hearing at the New York Supreme Court, Rosenberg depicted Mangione in a more subdued light, dressed in a green sweater and bulletproof vest over a white collared shirt. He appeared older than his years, gazing away from the judge and his lawyer Karen Friedman Agnifilo. Agnifilo, in contrast, is shown passionately arguing in front of the judge, who remains stoic.

Mangione’s legal team argued that his constitutional rights were violated by Altoona police when they obtained evidence during his detainment at a McDonald’s in December. No trial date has been set, but Mangione faces federal charges that could result in a death penalty if convicted. He is currently in custody in Brooklyn.

In a written statement released on February 14, Mangione expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support he has received from people across the country and around the world. Despite being unable to respond to all the letters he receives, he assures that he reads each one.

On the evening of February 20, an activist group projected an enlarged image of Mangione, depicting him as the “patron saint of health care justice,” onto a building in lower Manhattan. The image, originally shared on social media in December, went viral with the added message “Free Luigi.” Judge Gregory Carro is overseeing the case, which continues to captivate the public’s attention.

The ongoing saga of Luigi Mangione serves as a poignant reminder of the complexities and injustices within the healthcare system. As the legal proceedings unfold, supporters and critics alike are closely watching the outcome of this high-profile case.
