Robert Duvall’s Journey to Creating “The Apostle”
Robert Duvall’s film The Apostle was a project that was deeply personal to him. In order to research and understand the world of Pentecostal churches, Duvall traveled to Hughes, Arkansas, where he attended a local church service. Growing up in a churchgoing U.S. Navy family during World War II, Duvall was familiar with the inner workings of faith, but he had never experienced anything quite like the Pentecostal church he visited in Arkansas.
Describing the experience, Duvall said that the people in the church were filled with a joy and passion for their faith that was palpable. He was moved by the energy and spirit that filled the room as the congregation sang, clapped, and shouted to God. It was an experience that stayed with him and inspired him to tell their story.
He was drawn to the idea of portraying a preacher on screen, someone who was inherently good but also flawed, much like all of us. The character he created was called by God at a young age and became a respected minister known for his charismatic preaching. However, his personal life was plagued by marital infidelity, leading to the unraveling of his family.
Duvall felt a strong connection to this story, as he believed that it was important to show the complexities and imperfections of human nature. He wanted to explore the idea that even those who are called by God can struggle with their own demons and make mistakes.
After years of wanting to write this story, Duvall finally sat down to pen the script for The Apostle. It was a labor of love for him, as he poured his heart and soul into creating a film that would do justice to the story he had witnessed in that small Pentecostal church in Arkansas.
The Apostle is a testament to Duvall’s dedication to his craft and his commitment to telling stories that resonate with audiences on a deep and emotional level. It is a film that explores faith, redemption, and the complexities of the human spirit, all through the eyes of a flawed but ultimately good-hearted preacher.
