DOGE was Ramaswamy's first big government gig. You wouldn't know it as he kicks off his Ohio bid.

Vivek Ramaswamy’s Ohio gubernatorial bid kicked off in Cincinnati with a bang, as the 39-year-old highlighted his background and vision for the state. However, one notable omission from his speech was his short-lived stint as co-leader of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which lasted only 69 days and ended amidst tensions with Elon Musk.

Despite the absence of DOGE from his announcement, Ramaswamy’s campaign is seen as one of the first to launch in the second Trump administration, setting the tone for the upcoming 2026 midterm elections. By steering clear of discussing DOGE, Ramaswamy may have been acknowledging the potential political backlash in a state like Ohio, where federal job cuts could impact a significant number of workers.

The decision to gloss over his time at DOGE may also stem from a desire to avoid highlighting his political setbacks, including failed attempts at the presidency and a Senate seat appointment. While some supporters like Andy Mauser believe in DOGE’s early work, others like Andrew Belcher speculate that personal disagreements with Musk could have led to Ramaswamy’s silence on the matter.

Despite the DOGE controversy, Ramaswamy’s launch event drew attention to his policy proposals, such as banning cellphones in schools and cutting regulations. Aligning himself closely with former President Trump, who endorsed him on social media, Ramaswamy emphasized his commitment to reviving Ohio’s conviction and aligning with Trump’s vision for the nation.

As Ramaswamy vies to succeed term-limited Gov. Mike DeWine, he faces competition from Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost, who has criticized his brief tenure at DOGE. Yost’s attacks on Ramaswamy’s loyalty to Trump on day one of his administration have not been directly addressed by the candidate, who instead focused on his policy platform and connection to the former president.

In the midst of a crowded and competitive gubernatorial race, Ramaswamy’s decision to avoid discussing DOGE may be a strategic move to appeal to Republican voters while sidestepping potential criticisms. With Trump’s endorsement and a focus on reviving Ohio’s economy and values, Ramaswamy is positioning himself as a candidate who can deliver for the state in the years to come.
