Two years ago, a Black man faced discrimination at a Thornton hotel when he tried to use the bathroom in the lobby in the middle of the night. The man, Freddie Davis, has now filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against the Baymont by Wyndham Thornton, alleging that a front desk clerk used a racist slur against him and called the police unnecessarily.

The incident occurred on February 25, 2023, at around 3 a.m. Davis, who was charging his Tesla at a nearby gas station, entered the hotel lobby to use the bathroom after finding the gas station closed. Despite the bathroom being closed for cleaning, Davis was confronted by the white front desk clerk who allegedly hurled racial slurs at him and accused him of being aggressive.

Following the altercation, Thornton police arrived at the scene and both Davis and the clerk were cited for disorderly conduct. Despite the clerk’s admission of using a racist slur, she kept her job while Davis was kicked out of the hotel when he returned to file a complaint a few days later.

In an attempt to address the issue, Davis tried to file a complaint with the hotel chain, but was met with further discrimination as he was accused of trespassing and escorted out by police.

The lawsuit accuses the hotel company of failing to address the racism displayed during the incidents and of inadequate employee training. Representatives for the hotel have not yet commented on the matter.
