Protecting our Coasts: The Battle Between Hard Defences and Nature-Based Solutions

The recent findings on coastal protection methods have shed light on the preferences and beliefs of communities facing the threats of erosion and flooding. According to the study, Nature-Based Coastal Solutions (NBCS) have emerged as a popular choice, with 60 per cent of respondents expressing their support for these sustainable approaches that work in harmony with nature.

Despite the popularity of NBCS, the majority of respondents still believe that hard defences, such as seawalls and groynes, are more effective in protecting coastal areas. This discrepancy between preference and perceived effectiveness highlights a significant gap that needs to be addressed in coastal management strategies.

Hard defences have been tried and tested over the years, providing visible and tangible protection against the forces of nature. In contrast, NBCS are relatively new and their long-term outcomes are not as well-known. The lack of familiarity and evidence surrounding NBCS can lead to skepticism and hesitancy among communities.

One key takeaway from the study is the importance of raising awareness about the benefits and effectiveness of NBCS. Public education and communication are essential in bridging the gap between what people want and what they believe will work. By showcasing successful examples of NBCS in action and involving local communities in the planning process, we can build trust and support for these innovative solutions.

In order to make NBCS a central component of coastal protection, a hybrid approach that combines both nature-based and traditional defences could be a viable solution. This integrated strategy offers immediate protection from hard defences while harnessing the long-term benefits of natural coastal features. By demonstrating the effectiveness of this hybrid approach through collaborative projects, we can pave the way for a more sustainable and resilient coastal future.

The study was conducted by a team of experts in environmental change, economics, and human geography. Dr. Avidesh Seenath, Dr. Scott Mahadeo, and Dr. Jade Catterson bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the table, advocating for a holistic approach to coastal protection that not only safeguards our homes but also nurtures our environment.

As the risks to our coasts continue to escalate, it is imperative that we embrace innovative solutions that not only protect our communities but also promote sustainability and resilience. By fostering a deeper understanding of NBCS, engaging with local stakeholders, and implementing hybrid strategies, we can embark on a journey towards a more harmonious relationship with nature and a brighter future for generations to come.
