Tenpercenteries, the beloved column that gives readers an inside look at Hollywood’s top talent agencies and management firms, is back at Variety. This revival comes with a renewed focus on the deals and gossip surrounding showbiz’s leading talent representation companies.

At United Talent Agency (UTA), a recent decision to suspend the long-standing free lunch service caused quite a stir among the staff. Initially introduced as a post-pandemic perk to entice employees back to the office, the free meals from the neighboring Leora restaurant had been a generous benefit that lasted until 2025. With dishes like a $15 turkey club sandwich and a $22 sesame ginger salad, UTA’s free lunch offering was a rare treat in a city known for its expensive dining options.

The tradition of providing free meals in Hollywood offices originated in Silicon Valley, where tech companies like Facebook set up food courts to keep employees happy and well-fed. While Netflix continues to offer an impressive array of dining options at its headquarters, UTA’s decision to suspend its free lunch service reflects the ongoing industry-wide cost-cutting measures.

In contrast to UTA, competitors like Creative Artists Agency (CAA) and William Morris Endeavor (WME) do not currently provide free lunches to their staff. To soften the blow of losing this perk, UTA’s leadership is considering alternative benefits like coupons, which are expected to be rolled out in the coming weeks. Some assistants at the agency have raised concerns about the financial burden of purchasing their own lunches, prompting discussions about potential compensation for the loss of the free meals.

On the talent representation front, notable signings include former Vice President Kamala Harris joining CAA for representation in speaking engagements and publishing. Additionally, Gersh has signed actress Constance Wu, known for her roles in “Crazy Rich Asians” and “Fresh Off the Boat.” UTA has secured Grammy and Academy Award-winning artist Jon Batiste, while former President Joe Biden has returned to CAA for representation.

Other recent signings include digital media company Jubilee Media and its founder Jason Y. Lee joining UTA, and actress Quvenzhané Wallis signing with Gersh. Almost Friday Media, the comedy production hub behind the Instagram meme account Friday Beers, has partnered with Range Media Partners for a TV pilot project. Writer and director Matt Hastings has also signed with Gersh, continuing his collaboration with attorney Bob Getman and The Gotham Group.

As Tenpercenteries makes its return to Variety, readers can look forward to more updates on the latest talent agency signings and industry gossip in the weekly magazine. The column offers a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the fast-paced world of Hollywood talent representation, showcasing the deals and developments that shape the entertainment landscape.
