China hits back at US imports

In response to recent US tariffs, China has quickly retaliated by announcing increases in import levies on a variety of American agricultural and food products, ranging from 10% to 15%. Additionally, China has placed export and investment restrictions on 25 US firms, further escalating the trade tensions between the two countries.

President Donald Trump’s threatened 10% duty on Chinese imports went into effect on Tuesday, raising the total tariff to 20% in response to perceived Chinese inaction on drug flows. This additional tariff adds to the existing levies on numerous Chinese goods, with the US claiming that China supplies chemicals used in fentanyl production, a charge that China denies.

Effective March 10, China will impose an extra 15% tariff on US chicken, wheat, corn, and cotton, as well as a 10% levy on soybeans, sorghum, pork, beef, aquatic products, fruits and vegetables, and dairy imports. In a statement, China’s finance ministry expressed that the US’s unilateral tariff measures violate World Trade Organization rules and disrupt the economic and trade cooperation between the two countries.

China’s commerce ministry echoed these sentiments, asserting that China will protect its legitimate rights and interests in the face of these tariffs. The ongoing trade dispute continues to impact industries on both sides, with no clear resolution in sight.
