The 40-year anniversary of the NCAA Tournament’s expansion to 64 teams is a significant milestone in college basketball history. To commemorate this occasion, a ranking of every men’s basketball champion in that era was created based on various criteria. The ranking system took into account factors such as seed, regular season and conference tournament titles, overall win percentage, difficulty of the NCAA Tournament path, dominance of NCAA run, and talent on the roster.

The ranking was divided into tiers, with Tier 5 starting with the 1985 Villanova team, known for their incredible underdog story and monumental upset of Georgetown in the title game. The 2014 UConn team, led by Shabazz Napier, also made the list for their impressive run through the tournament. Other teams in this tier included the 1988 Kansas squad, known as “Danny and the Miracles”, and the 1997 Arizona team that beat three No. 1 seeds on their way to the championship.

Moving on to Tier 4, the 2006 Florida team stood out for their strong performance in both the SEC and NCAA tournaments. The 2023 UConn team was remembered for their dominant run through the tournament, while the 2003 Syracuse team, led by Carmelo Anthony, was recognized for their memorable championship run.

In Tier 3, the 1994 Arkansas team was highlighted for their solid regular season performance and conference title. The 2013 Louisville team, known for their suffocating defense, also made the list. The 2004 UConn team, led by Emeka Okafor and Ben Gordon, was recognized for their strong interior defense. The 2019 Virginia team, which redeemed themselves after a historic upset the previous year, was also included in this tier.

Tier 2 featured some of the most dominant champions in the last 40 years, including the 1996 Kentucky team, known for their loaded roster and impressive record. The 1992 Duke team, led by Christian Laettner and Grant Hill, was also ranked highly for their iconic moments in the tournament. The top spot in Tier 1 went to the 2024 UConn team, recognized for their complete dominance throughout the season and the NCAA Tournament.

Overall, these rankings provide a comprehensive look at the best men’s basketball champions since the expansion to a 64-team bracket, showcasing the talent, dominance, and memorable moments of these historic teams.
