Federal agents in the Eastern District of New York are gearing up to combat terrorism, gang activity, and drug trafficking in Long Island and parts of New York City. This initiative was announced by the newly sworn-in interim US Attorney, John J. Durham, following President Trump’s recent address to Congress where he emphasized the need to crack down on criminals involved in drug trade and violence.
Durham highlighted the importance of targeting the leadership and management of criminal organizations to dismantle them effectively. The focus will be on combating drug-related crimes and preventing overdoses in the region. Assistant U.S. Attorney Megan E. Farrell, known for prosecuting organized crime, gang, and sex trafficking cases, will be part of the strike force.
The Transnational Criminal Organizations Strike Force was unveiled shortly after President Trump’s announcement of imposing foreign terror designations on Mexican cartels, Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua, and the notorious MS-13 gang, which has a significant presence on Long Island. Trump’s decision placed these groups in the same category as ISIS, signifying a strong stance against gang violence.
Durham specifically mentioned targeting MS-13 and other violent gangs and cartels like the Sinaloa organization. The task force will also focus on combating racketeering and other forms of terrorism. Additionally, efforts will be made to curb the local sale of synthetic heroin fentanyl, following a recent case where a Bloods gang leader was charged for selling fatal doses of the drug.
Francisco J. Navarro, an expert in international narcotics and money laundering, has been appointed as the director of the strike force. The team will comprise representatives from each criminal division within the Eastern District, along with members from the Justice Department’s Project Safe Neighborhood, a collaborative effort to address regional threats.
The formation of this strike force signifies a proactive approach to combatting organized crime, gang violence, and drug trafficking in the Eastern District of New York. By targeting the top echelons of criminal organizations and addressing key issues like drug overdose deaths, the authorities aim to enhance public safety and dismantle these ruthless entities.
