Michael Astorino, a junior at Wesleyan University, has been making waves both on and off the basketball court. Despite only playing a total of 11 minutes in five games this season, Astorino has managed to carve out a niche for himself in the world of name, image, and likeness (NIL) opportunities.

With a passion for marketing and entrepreneurship, Astorino has taken it upon himself to explore the possibilities that NIL presents for college athletes, even at the Division III level. Inspired by the success of Jack Betts, a former football player who earned the moniker “The King of D3 NIL,” Astorino set out to create his own path in the NIL space.

Using a combination of ambition and hustle, Astorino reached out to brands through various channels, including email, Instagram direct messages, and LinkedIn. His unique pitch to these brands was that he would not only represent them as a college athlete but also create engaging content in exchange for free products. This approach led to partnerships with over 15 brands, including Air Relax, Suja Organic, and Spacemilk.

Astorino’s foray into co-founding an NIL agency with former kicker Nick O’Shea has also been successful. Together, they have helped secure deals for more than 80 athletes and even earned a $25,000 grant to conduct the Payton Harvey Cheer Camp in Detroit.

Despite his limited playing time on the basketball court, Astorino’s impact off the court has been significant. His entrepreneurial spirit and creativity have not gone unnoticed by his coaches and peers. Wesleyan basketball coach Joe Reilly commended Astorino for his non-traditional approach to NIL opportunities, noting that he is creating his own path in a space with no blueprint.

In addition to his NIL ventures, Astorino is also involved in teaching a “Wesleyan Shark Tank” course, where students learn how to pitch businesses to potential investors. His dedication to balancing academics, athletics, and business endeavors is a testament to his work ethic and passion for marketing.

As Astorino looks towards the future, he is open to various opportunities, including a potential full-time job at Spacemilk, a production assistant role on the television show “Shark Tank,” and further expanding his NIL agency. One thing is certain: Astorino is making the most of his college experience, both on and off the court, as he continues to explore the exciting world of NIL opportunities.
