David Surman, a talented artist originally from a small coastal village in southwest England, is currently based in London. His upbringing in a picturesque environment surrounded by animals has greatly influenced his artistry. Drawing on a wide range of art historical references and memories from his past, Surman’s paintings are a reflection of his unique perspective on the world.

His latest solo exhibition, titled “After the Flood,” is currently on display at the Rebecca Hassock Art Gallery in London. Unlike his previous collections, this body of work is less abstract but still maintains the gestural quality that is characteristic of Surman’s style. Bold brushstrokes capture the essence of animals such as bulls and horses, showcasing their strength and grace in a captivating manner.

Surman’s work delves into the human tendency to project emotions and feelings onto the natural world. By portraying animals in a way that reflects our own experiences and ideologies, he challenges viewers to look beyond the surface and engage with the deeper meaning behind his art. In a 2023 interview, Surman explained, “The creatures that I paint are caught up in our human problem, which is the separation from the world caused by consciousness.”

One of the standout pieces in the exhibition is “Old Stew Head,” where a troubled fox is depicted holding a limp fish in its jaws. Another striking painting, “Bathers At K’gari,” shows a dog carrying a young pup under a bright blue sky, evoking a sense of anxiety and tenderness.

“After the Flood” will be on display in London until March 29th. To explore more of David Surman’s work, visit his website and follow him on Instagram for updates and insights into his artistic process.

As you immerse yourself in Surman’s expressive paintings, you’ll be drawn into a world where animals serve as a mirror to our own humanity. Each piece invites viewers to contemplate the intricate relationship between humans and the natural world, sparking a dialogue about consciousness and our connection to the environment.
