Consumers and grocers are increasingly interested in verifying the quality of the food they buy, particularly when it comes to beef. This demand for transparency in the supply chain has led to innovative solutions like the one introduced by Vivian Tai, Director of Innovation at GS1 US, in a conversation with Earth911 in February 2024.

Tai discussed GS1’s Digital Link advanced universal product code, which provides a new standard for cattle traceability using blockchain technology. Jayson Berryhill, cofounder of Wholechain, collaborated with GS1 to develop Wholechain Cattle Traceability, a system that ensures compliance with standards such as animal welfare and feeding practices.

The blockchain-based system implemented by Wholechain allows for the tracking and authentication of information about the entire supply chain of cattle, including details about where the animals were raised, what they ate, and how they were treated. This level of transparency not only benefits consumers who want to make informed choices about the food they eat but also helps companies comply with regulations such as the Food Safety Modernization Act Rule 204.

In addition to providing more information to consumers, the collaboration between GS1 and Wholechain has the potential to calculate environmental impacts like deforestation and methane emissions. This technology could be used to create more transparent, sustainable, and circular global supply chains, extending beyond the cattle industry to other sectors.
