The recent week has been a whirlwind of activity for the Union of Concerned Scientists, with various key events highlighting the organization’s commitment to protecting science and scientific research.

One notable event was the joint effort of 48 scientific societies, associations, and organizations representing nearly 100,000 scientists from diverse fields. These groups united to send a letter to members of Congress, urging them to safeguard federally funded scientific research and federal scientists. This show of unity within the scientific community is a significant achievement and demonstrates the collective power of scientists coming together for a common cause.

Another significant development was the filing of a lawsuit by the Campaign Legal Center on behalf of the Union of Concerned Scientists and other groups against Elon Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). The lawsuit alleges that Musk and DOGE exceeded their authority by cutting federal funding, dismantling federal agencies, and terminating federal employees.

The week culminated in the Stand Up for Science 2025 events held across the country, where UCS staff and members joined thousands of others in rallying for science. The events served as a platform for scientists and science supporters to voice their opposition to the administration’s attacks on science and reaffirm their commitment to upholding the integrity of scientific research.

During the events, UCS staff members delivered impassioned speeches, including one on MSNBC’s “Prime” program, highlighting the detrimental effects of the administration’s anti-science agenda on public health and safety. The message was clear: the scientific community will not stay silent in the face of threats to science and will continue to advocate for evidence-based decision-making.

Despite the challenges posed by the current political climate, the scientific community remains resolute in its commitment to defending science and promoting the use of scientific evidence for the greater good. As the Trump administration continues to undermine federal science agencies and experts, scientists are stepping up to lead the charge in advocating for a world where science is valued and utilized to address pressing societal issues.

In the words of MSNBC host Symone Sanders Townsend, there is no savior coming to rescue us – it is up to us to lead ourselves out of this crisis. The scientific community must stand together, be courageous, and use its collective voice to demand accountability and integrity in policymaking.

As we navigate these turbulent times, it is essential for scientists and science supporters to remain steadfast in their commitment to upholding the principles of science and advocating for evidence-based decision-making. By standing united and speaking out against attacks on science, we can work towards a future where science is respected, protected, and utilized for the betterment of society.
