When it comes to testing phones, the display is a crucial aspect that can make or break the user experience. While popular brands like Apple, Samsung, and Google offer impressive displays on their devices, it’s the TCL phones with Nxtpaper technology that have caught my attention.

TCL, known for being one of the world’s largest TV makers, has brought their expertise to the smartphone industry with Nxtpaper technology. What sets TCL phones apart is their versatility, particularly in the display department. The matt coating on the display eliminates unpleasant reflections commonly found on glossy screens, ensuring visibility in any environment, even direct sunlight.

One of the standout features of TCL phones is the variety of display modes they offer. The regular color mode delivers rich, vibrant colors for an enjoyable content consumption experience. The ‘Color Paper Mode’ reduces saturation for a paper-like display, while the ‘Ink Paper Mode’ switches to black and white for a more comfortable viewing experience. The ‘Max Ink Mode’ takes it a step further by reducing the refresh rate to extend battery life.

I had the opportunity to try out these modes at MWC 2025, and I was impressed by how they transformed the user experience. The ‘Max Ink Mode’ is particularly useful for minimizing distractions, allowing only a select few apps to be accessible for focused work or reading time. Switching between modes is seamless, thanks to the physical ‘Nxtpaper key’ on the side of the device.

In addition to its innovative display technology, the TCL 60 Nxtpaper boasts a 108MP rear camera, MediaTek Helio G92 chipset, and a large 5200mAh battery. Priced at €199, it could be a game-changer in the budget phone segment. However, the downside is that TCL has no immediate plans to launch the phone in the UK or US, which is disappointing news for potential buyers in those regions.

For European consumers, the TCL 60 SE Nxtpaper 5G offers similar display modes at a lower price point of £179.99. Though it features a downgraded display and camera compared to the 60 Nxtpaper, the generous battery capacity remains a highlight.

Overall, the TCL 60 Nxtpaper is a standout product that showcases the brand’s commitment to innovation. It’s no surprise that it was recognized in Tech Advisor’s Best of MWC 2025 Awards. Hopefully, TCL will expand availability to more regions in the near future, allowing a wider audience to experience the benefits of Nxtpaper technology.
