The Shift in American Perception Towards Immigration: A Military Professor’s Observations

In the early 2000s, a notable change in Americans’ attitudes towards immigration started catching the attention of many, including myself. Conversations with individuals reflected a surprising level of tolerance towards not just legal but also illegal immigration. This shift was particularly evident among my students, the majority of whom were officers in the U.S. Navy.

Subtle cues in our discussions hinted at this evolving perspective, often surfacing in casual remarks related to topics like U.S. labor markets. Although I didn’t specifically dedicate a segment of my class to immigration, its relevance naturally emerged in the context of our readings.

Respecting the diversity of opinions among my students, I refrained from imposing my views. However, during a particularly harmonious quarter, I gently pointed out an observation that struck me: “This is the most anti-immigrant class I’ve encountered in nearly two decades of teaching here.”

Quick to clarify, a student interjected, “Anti illegal immigrants, sir.”

Acknowledging the distinction, I highlighted the implicit message behind calls for legal immigration, emphasizing the challenges many face in navigating the complex process. Contrary to popular belief, immigrating to the U.S. is far from straightforward, with stringent eligibility criteria deterring most individuals.

Reflecting on these discussions led me to a compelling article by David Bier from the Cato Institute, shedding light on “What Trump Has Done and Imminently Plans to Do on Immigration.” This piece, along with recent reports of the Trump administration targeting even legal immigrants by threatening their green card status, underscores the precarious state of immigration policies.

As debates on immigration intensify, it becomes crucial to grasp the nuances and challenges inherent in the system, beyond simplistic narratives. The evolving landscape of immigration policies demands a nuanced understanding and thoughtful deliberation to navigate the complexities effectively.
