OnePlus has officially announced that it will be bidding farewell to one of the most distinctive design features of its smartphones – the alert slider. Rumors had been circulating for some time that OnePlus would be replacing the alert slider with a customizable button, following in the footsteps of Apple.

In a recent blog post by OnePlus co-founder and CEO Pete Lau, titled “Let’s talk about the Alert Slider”, Lau expressed his fondness for the alert slider as a symbol of thoughtful design. However, he also acknowledged that the large hardware component was primarily used for switching sound profiles, prompting the question of whether it could serve a more versatile purpose. Lau revealed that the company plans to evolve the alert slider into a button that adapts to the user, offering a more personalized experience similar to the iPhone’s Action button.

The new OnePlus button is expected to be customizable and multi-functional, allowing users to perform various tasks with a single press. While it will still retain the ability to switch sound profiles without waking the phone, it will no longer have the physical clunk associated with the alert slider.

Speculations suggest that the new button could potentially mute the phone, open the camera, activate the flashlight, take a screenshot, or launch an app with a single press. Official details are limited at this time, but more information is likely to be revealed with the launch of OnePlus’s upcoming flagship phones.

The removal of the alert slider marks the end of an era for OnePlus devices, as the feature had become synonymous with the brand’s identity. Despite the shift towards a more versatile button, many users will likely miss the tactile simplicity and unique functionality of the alert slider. However, the promise of a customizable and adaptable button offers hope for an innovative user experience.

Overall, while the alert slider may no longer be a part of OnePlus smartphones, the introduction of a new multi-functional button signals a new era of design and functionality for the brand. The legacy of the alert slider will be remembered fondly, but the evolution towards a more personalized user experience is an exciting prospect for OnePlus enthusiasts.
