Chuck Schumer

In a rather candid moment during a Thursday night interview on MSNBC with Chris Hayes, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer did not mince words when he referred to Republicans as “bastards.” This colorful remark came as he discussed a recently passed spending bill that he reluctantly agreed to support.

Schumer articulated that the only language the Republicans seem to respond to is one of confrontation. He drew a parallel to Ontario’s Doug Ford, who reacted to tariff threats with his own retaliatory tariffs, suggesting that Republicans only back down when met with equal force. Hayes echoed this sentiment, arguing that Republicans thrive on conflict, and that a strategy of non-engagement merely invites them to press their agenda further.

“No, Chris, we are going to confront them on every front — from taxing billionaires to Medicaid reforms. They’ve transformed into a plutocracy; we need to challenge that directly,” Schumer asserted. He cautioned that if a government shutdown were to occur, it would distract from pressing issues and allow Republicans to dominate the narrative over proposed budget cuts.

In a moment of unintended levity, Schumer called Republicans “bastards” again, quickly attempting to pivot with a somewhat awkward apology. “To engage in conflict on the best grounds, we need to emphasize that they’re making the middle class shoulder the burden of tax cuts for the wealthy. It’s far better not to be embroiled in a shutdown that could divert attention from our primary battle against these, um, people,” he stated, stumbling over his choice of words yet again.
