Your guide to what the 2024 US election means for Washington and the world

The United States launched a series of airstrikes against Houthi rebels in Yemen over the weekend, with President Donald Trump issuing a strong warning to the Iran-backed group. Trump stated that “hell will rain down upon” the rebels if they continue to attack shipping in the Red Sea. The president also called on Iran to immediately cease its support for the militant group.

The airstrikes were in response to threats made by the Houthis to resume attacks on shipping in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. These attacks have previously disrupted maritime trade routes and posed a threat to American and other vessels in the region. In a post on Truth Social, Trump announced the military action against the Houthi terrorists in Yemen, citing their campaign of piracy, violence, and terrorism.

Last year, the Houthis carried out numerous attacks on merchant vessels and US navy ships in the Red Sea, claiming solidarity with Palestinians during Israel’s offensive against Hamas in Gaza. Despite previous airstrikes on Houthi military targets, the attacks continued until a ceasefire was reached in January. However, the recent blockade of aid to Gaza by Israel prompted the Houthis to threaten a resumption of attacks on shipping.

The US airstrikes targeted Houthi leaders, bases, and missile defenses, with Trump vowing to use overwhelming force until the objective is achieved. He warned the rebels that their attacks would not be tolerated and that they must stop immediately. Trump also issued a stern warning to Iran, accusing the country of supporting the Houthis with advanced drone and missile technology.

The president’s actions are part of a renewed effort to pressure Iran, including the reimposition of sanctions and the designation of the Houthis as a foreign terrorist organization. The conflict in Yemen has been ongoing for a decade, with the Houthis controlling the capital, Sana’a, and most of the north of the country. The civil war has drawn in regional powers such as Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, further complicating the situation.

The US airstrikes resulted in civilian casualties in Sana’a, according to reports from the Houthi-run health ministry. The conflict in Yemen is complex, with various actors involved and competing interests at play. The international community continues to monitor the situation closely, as the impact of the conflict extends beyond Yemen’s borders.

As the situation in Yemen unfolds, the White House Watch newsletter will provide in-depth analysis and coverage of the implications for Washington and the world. Sign up now to stay informed and gain valuable insights into the ongoing developments in this critical region.
