The progressive left appears to be experiencing a severe case of cognitive dissonance following President Trump’s announcement of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). This initiative aims to streamline the federal bureaucracy and curb extravagant spending—an objective that seems to have struck a nerve.
In an amusing twist of political irony, these critics seem to have forgotten that former President Barack Obama attempted a similar initiative back in 2011, albeit with less fanfare and, arguably, less efficacy.
During his presidency, Obama initiated a “Campaign to Cut Waste,” appointing then-Vice President Joe Biden to spearhead efforts against squandering taxpayer funds. The rhetoric surrounding this campaign closely resembles the justifications being offered today by Trump and tech mogul Elon Musk regarding DOGE.
In a now-infamous video, Obama touted his administration’s efforts to eradicate government waste, highlighting ludicrous federal expenditures such as a fan page for a folk music group comprised of Forest Rangers.
Moreover, he proudly pointed out that the federal government owned numerous vacant buildings, including a vast warehouse in Brooklyn that had languished unused for over a decade, ensnared by the very bureaucratic red tape he sought to dismantle. Yet, when Trump and Musk attempt to actualize these promises more effectively, it’s suddenly framed as an assault on democratic principles.

Following the video’s virality, Musk did not shy away from the opportunity to comment, tweeting, “Obama sounds exactly like @DOGE !!”
Megyn Kelly also joined the fray, quipping sarcastically via tweet, “This is totally different because… it’s different people and it’s different and it’s…”
Her jest underscores the blatant hypocrisy within the Democratic ranks, who enthusiastically applauded Obama’s waste-cutting claims but now decry fascism when Trump takes tangible steps toward similar goals.
One social media user aptly remarked, “The Campaign to Cut Waste was Obama’s DOGE. But it faltered because he chose Joe Biden to lead it.” Additionally, it’s worth noting that in March 2010, Obama inadvertently laid the groundwork for DOGE while attempting to mitigate the fallout from the botched rollout of the Obamacare website.
Barack Obama enacted the Affordable Care Act without a single Republican vote, establishing a healthcare framework that bore similarities to socialized systems in Europe.
Securing the necessary votes for this monumental industry overhaul required significant effort and negotiation.

Moreover, it is not just Obama who has walked this path; former President Bill Clinton, alongside Vice President Al Gore, championed similar initiatives during the 1990s, such as the Reinventing Government Initiative and the National Partnership for Reinventing Government (NPR).
