Artificial intelligence (AI) has been a topic of intense debate and exploration since the early days of computing. The question of whether machines can think has driven advancements in technology, leading to the development of large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT that are now transforming various aspects of society.

As the use of AI tools such as LLMs becomes more prevalent, new social norms are emerging around their applications. From assisting students in writing essays to potentially reshaping government operations, the possibilities and challenges posed by AI are being discussed on a global scale.

In the United States, the Trump administration’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is leveraging AI, including a chatbot named GSAi, to streamline federal processes and boost productivity. Similarly, in the UK, Prime Minister Keir Starmer views AI as a valuable tool for governmental transformation.

However, the effectiveness of LLMs in government functions remains a subject of debate. While automation can enhance efficiency, questions persist about the true nature of these AI systems. Recent revelations, such as the release of ChatGPT interactions involving a UK government official, highlight the complexities surrounding AI usage in policymaking.

Current LLMs lack true intelligence and are prone to biases and inaccuracies. Despite their capabilities in processing vast amounts of information, they fall short of achieving artificial general intelligence (AGI) – the goal of creating machines that can replicate human thought processes.

Researchers suggest viewing LLMs not as intelligent entities but as cultural and social technologies that facilitate information access and sharing. By understanding the limitations of AI and harnessing its capabilities appropriately, governments can enhance operational efficiency without relying on AI for critical decision-making.

Ultimately, the journey towards AGI continues to evolve, with AI serving as a valuable tool rather than a replacement for human intellect. As discussions around AI ethics and governance unfold, striking a balance between innovation and responsible AI deployment remains paramount in shaping the future of technology and society.
