A shocking incident unfolded on a residential street in North Babylon, Long Island, this week, involving a reckless teen driver and a brave bystander who took matters into his own hands to prevent a getaway.

It all started when 18-year-old Marianne Mkrtchian was behind the wheel of a 2023 Mercedes Benz C30 on Skidmore Road near Lloyd Avenue. In a moment of carelessness, Mkrtchian crashed into a utility pole, causing it to snap and fall to the ground.

As if that wasn’t enough, when a 54-year-old man approached her to see if she was alright, Mkrtchian shifted her car into reverse and struck the man, pinning him against his own vehicle. The situation quickly escalated as Mkrtchian attempted to flee the scene by putting her car in drive.

However, a vigilant witness to the chaos took action by picking up a nearby brick and hurling it at the Mercedes, shattering the windshield and bringing the fleeing vehicle to a halt. Mkrtchian was forced to exit the car as police arrived on the scene and promptly arrested her.

The young driver, a resident of North Bellmore, was charged with leaving the scene of an accident involving serious physical injury. She is set to appear for arraignment at First District Court in Central Islip at a later time.

Meanwhile, the victim, also from North Babylon, sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Good Samaritan University Hospital in West Islip for medical treatment.

Despite the heroic intervention of the bystander who threw the brick, Suffolk County Police confirmed that he would not face any charges for his actions.

This harrowing incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of reckless driving and the importance of swift action to prevent further harm. The quick thinking of the bystander undoubtedly played a crucial role in apprehending the irresponsible driver and ensuring justice for the victim.
