Heather Rios is an artist whose creations look good enough to eat, but you might want to resist the urge. Using polymer clay and embroidery, Rios crafts slices of layer cake that are so realistic, you may mistake them for the real thing. Each slice is paired with a vintage plate and sometimes a fork, adding to the playful illusion.

The attention to detail in Rios’s work is truly remarkable. From the realistic frosting to the intricate decorations of berries, blossoms, and sprinkles, each piece is a feast for the eyes. Rios painstakingly embroiders each sponge element, creating patterned layers on a hoop before transferring them to the sculpture.

In addition to standalone sculptures, Rios also embellishes small paintings with shallow reliefs of cakes on canvas. These pieces highlight vibrant colors and the fluffy texture of the cake’s interior, adding another dimension to her art.

Some of Rios’s designs would be nearly impossible to replicate in real life, such as intricate floral patterns or motifs inspired by blue-and-white porcelain. Luckily, we can admire and own these unique creations without worrying about them going stale. You can find more of Rios’s work on her Instagram page and even purchase a slice from her Etsy shop.

Rios’s art is a delightful blend of creativity and craftsmanship, offering a whimsical take on everyone’s favorite dessert. Whether you’re a cake lover or simply appreciate fine art, Rios’s sculptures are sure to sweeten your day.
