An Iraqi father was recently arrested for attempting to “honor kill” his teenage daughter outside her high school in Washington state. The shocking incident, which took place outside Timberline High School in Lacey, involved Ihsan Ali allegedly choking his 17-year-old daughter to the point of unconsciousness and punching her boyfriend in the face. The reason behind this brutal attack was the daughter’s refusal to marry an older man in another country.
New bodycam footage of the aftermath of the incident revealed a disturbing reaction from Ali. As he was being led away in handcuffs by the police, he appeared to be more concerned about his car than his daughter. He was heard yelling in Arabic to his wife, Zahraa Ali, expressing worries about the police potentially stealing their vehicle. Despite the gravity of the situation, his primary concern seemed to be the fate of his car.
The attacked daughter later informed the police that her father had been threatening her with honor killing for rejecting the arranged marriage proposal. She had sought help from school staff after running away from home, which further angered her parents. The situation escalated when her parents arrived at the school and physically attacked her, with some of the violence captured on camera.
During the altercation, Ali was seen choking his daughter while other students, including her boyfriend, attempted to intervene. The girl revealed to the police that her father had choked her until she lost consciousness, all while telling her that her actions were not acceptable. The incident caused a commotion, prompting the school to go into lockdown as staff prevented the girl’s parents from entering the premises.
Both Ali and his wife were charged with attempted murder, attempted kidnapping, and assault in connection with the incident. The boyfriend’s father also disclosed ongoing issues with the Ali family, including a previous physical altercation that led them to seek a temporary protection order.
Honor killing, a practice prevalent in some societies, involves family members justifying the killing of a person, often a woman, on the grounds of bringing dishonor to the family. The tragic events that unfolded outside Timberline High School shed light on the harrowing consequences of such antiquated beliefs and actions.
