Since the unveiling of the Republicans’ ambitious $4.5 trillion tax cut plan aimed at the wealthy and corporations, experts on fiscal policy have been sounding alarm bells. They warn that such a hefty reduction in tax revenue will inevitably necessitate cuts to essential programs like Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid.

In a political landscape where direct cuts to these programs would be highly contentious, figures like Trump and Elon Musk are opting for a more palatable narrative—one that blames “waste, fraud, and abuse” for the financial shortfall.

Mark Alford, a member of the House Appropriations Committee from Missouri, openly acknowledged the need to trim these vital social safety nets during a recent interview on CNN:

“Look, Elon Musk is incredibly intelligent, far beyond my comprehension. However, he may not possess the finesse of seasoned politicians or news anchors when he discusses elimination. What we’re really addressing is the elimination of waste, fraud, and abuse.”

“It’s a fact that Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security account for approximately 75% of our federal budget. As mandatory spending, we must identify savings there. We will pursue this. The budget director recently informed our whip team that there are indeed efficiencies to be found in the Medicaid program.”

And there you have it—the Republican strategy has been transparent all along: to target “entitlements” for cuts.
