The Athletic has appointed Chris Weatherspoon as its first dedicated football finance writer. Chris is a chartered accountant who will be using his financial acumen as The BookKeeper to explore the money behind the game. He is starting with a series this week analysing the financial health of some of the Premier League’s biggest clubs.

Last summer, Manchester City, after winning a record fourth consecutive English league title, didn’t feel the need to spend much. However, a series of disappointing results led them to make significant investments in the winter transfer window. City splurged £183m, the highest-ever mid-season spend behind Chelsea. Despite their winter spree, City’s financial position remains robust thanks to their years of financial prosperity.

City’s revenue increased to a record £715m last season, making them the second-highest income-generating club in the world. Their commercial income figures have been a cause of debate, with allegations of disguising cash injections as sponsorship income. The club’s commercial revenue has grown significantly since the 2008 takeover, rising by over 1,000 per cent.

In terms of wages, City’s salary bill fell last season, but they continue to be the highest payers in the Premier League. Guardiola has highlighted City’s relatively low net spend in recent years, emphasizing the club’s success in generating profits from player sales.

City’s ongoing legal battle with the Premier League has brought their financials under scrutiny. The outcome of the court case could impact the club’s revenue stream. Despite the legal challenges, City remains committed to their expansion project at the Etihad Stadium, with significant infrastructure costs expected.

Overall, Manchester City’s financial journey since the Abu Dhabi United Group takeover has been a rollercoaster. Their ability to navigate the transfer market and generate profits from player sales has been a key factor in their financial success. The club’s commercial growth and consistent profitability have positioned them as one of the most financially stable clubs in world football. The court case outcome and future financial decisions will be crucial in determining City’s financial trajectory moving forward.
