Protecting Our Public Weather Services

This week, wildfires are raging across Texas, prompting life-saving alerts issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) to facilitate evacuations in the face of impending danger. Firefighters on the ground are utilizing NOAA satellites for real-time wildfire monitoring, showcasing the vital role that NOAA and NWS play in safeguarding lives during emergencies. These agencies, funded by taxpayer dollars, are indispensable assets that must be defended against the current administration’s attempts to undermine their effectiveness.

Theft of Public Assets

For over a century, the United States has invested in meteorological data collection and weather forecasting services through agencies like the NWS and NOAA. These agencies, supported by an annual budget of $1.3 billion, provide essential weather information that not only saves lives but also fuels a multi-billion dollar weather industry. From weather apps to aviation safety protocols, the data generated by NOAA and NWS serve a variety of sectors and are a public good accessible to all.

However, recent actions by the Trump administration, including the illegal invasion of NOAA headquarters, mass layoffs of staff, and cancellation of key leases, threaten to dismantle these vital services. The administration’s agenda, influenced by fossil fuel interests and a desire to privatize public resources, jeopardizes the free and open access to weather information that is crucial for public safety and economic stability.

The Harm of Disruption

If NOAA and NWS services are compromised, the consequences could be dire. Without reliable weather data, communities will be ill-prepared to face extreme weather events such as hurricanes, heatwaves, and floods. Air travel, agricultural planning, emergency response, and disaster recovery efforts will all suffer without the accurate and timely information provided by these agencies.

Between 2010 and 2024, NWS issued over 3.7 million extreme weather alerts that impacted every county in the US, highlighting the widespread reliance on their services. From wildfires in the West to hurricanes in the Gulf, NWS alerts play a critical role in informing individuals and communities about impending threats and guiding safety measures.

Potential Privatization Threat

Project 2025, a blueprint for dismantling federal agencies, hints at the possibility of privatizing NWS services, putting essential weather data behind a paywall. This move would not only deprive vulnerable populations of life-saving information but also undermine the principle of equitable access to public services. The administration’s disregard for the well-being of citizens in pursuit of profit-driven agendas is a dangerous precedent that must be challenged.

As hurricane season approaches and climate change intensifies extreme weather events, the need for robust weather forecasting and emergency response capabilities is more critical than ever. By protecting NOAA and NWS from privatization and budget cuts, we can ensure that the public good is preserved and that lives are saved in the face of natural disasters.

Take Action to Save Our Weather Services

It is imperative that we stand up against the dismantling of essential public services and the privatization of resources that belong to the American people. By advocating for the preservation of NOAA and NWS, we can uphold the values of science, safety, and public welfare that have guided these agencies for generations. Join us in defending our weather services and safeguarding the future of weather forecasting for all.
